Slept Through a Landslide (Tired Angels remix)

by rap legend Jesse Dangerously

  • The literary companion to the "Slept Through A Landslide" single. 44 7x7" B+W pages of essays, fiction, comics, poetry, and images, plus a full-colour wraparound cover illustrated & lettered by cartoonist Even Dahm (Rice Boy, Vattu, Order of Tales).

Contributors to the zine's content include Krista Muir, Brzowski, HW, Nicolas Carrier, Joyce MacDonald, Jennifer Dales, Meghan Lands, Shannon Fisher, and Jesse wrote a ton of stuff, too.

The first run was produced in August 2012, in a desperate scramble to merch up for FanExpo and the No Friends US tour in September. They all sold out in person, so this is the first time they've been available to STRANGERS on internet. Wow!

[sample - Doctor Who] The Doctor: In the end you just get tired... tired of the struggle; tired of losing everyone that matters to you. Tired of watching everything turn to dust. Lazarus: That's a price worth paying, The Doctor: Is it? [Hook - Krista] My angels, my angels are tired. [Scratch - Petey Pablo] *yawn* I get sleepy! [Noah23] Hell is nearly frosted and I'm feeling exhausted Used to have direction, but now I've completely lost it Tossing and turning, yearning for more Dirt on the floor, foot through the door, search and report Serpent of war, smoked out herbivore. "No man is an island," yeah, I've heard that before. Well, you certainly will drown off the shore, rotten to the core Me and Jesse D is like hip-hop galore! Walking in croc skin, toxic waste written on my face Frostbitten and lost without a trace (trace) I might be sour, but you have no taste (taste) And the mischief is a source of my grace (grace) Crack statues open with lack of emotion I've got wanderlust so I splash the vast ocean The balance dangles, just like a pendulum So go to sleep, beneath, my sweet Seraphim. [Hook - Krista & Jesse] My angels, my angels are tired. [scratch - Sage Francis] Dreams of falling asleep! [scratch - Wu-Tang Clan (Inspector Deck)] I guess that's the time when I'm not depressed But I'm STILL depressed! [scratch, Molemen (Buck 65/Sebutones)] Life is good, but why am I so miserable, then? [Jesse] Burning my bridges at both ends, persistent cough Laboured breathing . easy on the syrup, (gasp) a little wheezy Twisting off caps, feeling effects of distortion Reeling from dextromethorphan; drifting off Sex is important, sleep is for the weekend, hell is Round the corner, it's tricky to rock-a-bye, we can tell. Dreaming of a Sopwith Camel cockpit, your dog soars me and twenty-three is like . shoplift from stores rip off the gift shops and downtown boutiques Count down to lift-off in new sneaks; push you in the Bushes like Musique; it drips on the floor me and krista muir is like kids on a tour Gone to war with ominous thoughts, anonymous authors of communist plots and Omnivores when carnage is wrought, you run with McCarthy, we're punished with poverty Often as not, it's wearing us down. Thundering ignorance, wonder and innocence There's a new cherub in town, under the influence [Hook - Rosie] My angels, my angels are tired. [scratch - Atherton] Surrounded by this grief, it finally took its toll! [scratch - Kanye West] Play strings for the dramatic ending of that wack shit [Hook - Krista, Jesse, Rosie] My angels, my angels are tired. [scratch - Geto Boys (Scarface)] See, every time my eyes close, I start sweating, and blood starts coming out my nose. [scratch - Biggie] The stress is building up, I cant... I can't believe (I'm on my way over there, man) [Hook - Jesse] My angels, my angels are tired. [scratch - Psychiatric Consultations (Anxiety)] The real problem in a dying patient is a problem of desertion, and separation, and loneliness. We don't know what death is; we can't conceptualize it, but we all know what it's like to be alone, and afraid, and in the dark.

I followed death into the grove It turned to me and whispered go It’s time to rise above It’s time to rise up Then death it flew into my hair And it got tangled there The more it struggled it cried And then death (it) died Anvils not angels weigh in Dark matter Brawlers betray championing Dark matters Challenging our universe Dark matters Strengthened when weakened Reversed Dark matters My angels, my angels are tired My angels, my angels are tired My angels, my angels are tired My angels, my angels are tired

about

This single is a remix of "Tired Angels" by Krista Muir. The beat was built by M Mac, with other musical elements contributed by Peter Project, Jeff Ngan, and me. I creatively directed the whole thing and it made me feel like a mixture of James Lavelle and Kanye West.

I asked my friend and colleague of nearly 13 years, Noah 23, to rap on it with me - there was a special urgency because it was the end of 2011 and he had announced he was quitting music at the end of the year. We had tried a few times to work together before but technical & timing issues plagued our language... so this felt like my last chance.

He came through, and although it makes me really sad to think of him feeling the despair that he describes in his verse, he captured it beautifully. I'm so glad that he not only did me the honour of appearing, but of killing me on my own shit. Ouch.

There are many things to say about the themes and ideas in this song, but I'm not going to write them here. I've written them in a zine that's serves as a companion to the single, which also includes short fiction and memoirs and comics and illustrations and other pertinent works by friends of mine. You can order that here!

For now just listen closely, and figure out what you think it all adds up to.

And take care of yourself.
