about

I made the beat and wrote this in probably 2001 or 2002, as a way to process the ways that it made me feel inadequate and powerless to be so bad with money and responsibility. It can be seen as a third installment in a series that began with For Lack of Trying in 1997 and continued with Naked Branch Musings in 2000. It was a staple of my live shows in my first years with Backburner, and I remember vividly that I would actually, audibly slap my own face mid-line when I said "my face I slap" on stage. Early inklings of the performance art I'm still developing in my live show.

It wasn't slated for any specific album, so I didn't get around to recording a vocal take until 2012. That take just sat there waiting for a home ever since, and having it is one of the reasons I developed the intent to make The Rap Hundreds in the first place. It's a beat I've always been proud of, even though its components are simple, and verses that meant a lot to me, and kind of always will cut to the heart of how I feel about my solvency.

The mix and master was provided by @CMoneyBurns as usual, and the photo of the New Balance grinning because it doesn't know it's about to get Dipped was taken by me because I didn't leave enough time to commission art from the talented and very busy Sage Mosurinjohn.
